Stone anchor or “Killick” in Cornish referred to as a rock or big stone that a ship used in lieu of a metal anchor.
Slave manilla – shipwreck of the Duoro, sunk in 1843 off the Scilly Isles, southwest of
England. A schooner plying the illegal slave trade from Africa to the West Indies, the Duoro sank under unspecified conditions with a large cargo of bronze bracelets, known as “manillas,” which were meant to be traded for human lives in Africa, but are now inexpensive collectibles today. It was thought that one bangle equalled one slave.
Cast aluminium buoy – Used by fishermen to provide buoyancy, by being attached to ropes and fishing nets etc.
Admiralty Pattern Anchor
Folding stock to the anchor for small boats – often used for smuggling boats!
Grapnel – small anchor dropped over side to collect pots & barrels of whiskey or rum by the smugglers of old.
The Coal Brickette – from the wreck of the HERA - Four-masted steel barque, 1886; ex-
Richard Wagner; 1.994 ton, 276x41x23 ft. Hera was en route from Chili to Falmouth with a
cargo of nitrate, when on the 1st february 1914, she struck the Whelps reef during a south-westerly gale, which ripped through her hull and sank on the west side of Gull Rock, StVeryan Bay, Cornwall. The crew attempted to launch lifeboats, but they capsized. Only 5
survived,clinging to the only remaining mast. 19 sailors washed ashore and were buried in a massgrave in Veryan churchyard.
