Dear Friends,
Since entering 'ordinary' time in the lectionary we have been led through a series of reflections on what being a follower of Jesus is and how we live that kind of life. These teachings will continue over the coming months. Some of the content of these teachings are hard because they challenge the way we've got comfortable with doing things like Nicodemus who discovered that his attachment to stuff was hindering his walk with God as he put all his trust and faith in the wealth he had accumulated. He wasn't being greedy but neither was he generous. Somehow the way in which Nicodemus prioritised his finances meant that he was missing out on the joy and freedom of living a Christ filled life.
We were reminded in the readings last week that we cannot take our treasures with us when we die, therefore we need to consider what we want our legacy to be. I often ask recently bereaved family members to describe the person for whom they are booking the funeral to tell me through their words what this person was like. The way in which we talk about others tells us a lot about how well thought of particular people are. But I also ask this question to each of our churches...what do people say about their local church? I sincerely hope that it is not in a way that suggests that the local church has just expired!
The Fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self control (Gal 5:22-23) how much do we see this in evidence across the Upper Fal Parishes? How well are we sharing the Gospel with our neighbours, friends and strangers? How welcoming are we to those who are seeking, searching, or just looking? How welcoming are we to those who might like to abide with us? I would like to suggest that we need to be a people that extend a warm welcome to visitors and tourists alike and that we do not grow weary of doing so, like Abraham and Sarah we open our hearts to the possibility of new friends, new members to the worshipping community and in doing so, making room for them to be with us and adapting our ways to accommodate their needs thus growing together in love for God and one another. Then when people gossip about us they will indeed be praising and giving glory to God! Wouldn't that be a wonderful thing?
In October we will be holding an extraordinary joint PCC meeting to explore what 'generosity' might look like for us as we seek to join together as one benefice and how that might spill out as we consider ministry and mission across each parish.
grace and peace,
Caroline

Generosity and Stewardship Matters
Financially Supporting your church
The Parish Giving Scheme is our preferred method of receiving regular giving within the churches of Probus, Ladock and Grampound. If you haven't already transferred from other forms of giving then do check out how it works through the link here or by contacting your treasurer.
Please do consider whether this is a good time to review your regular giving at the church, or perhaps you would like to plan for a future donation and leave a gift in your will. The Church of England has produced guidance on legacy giving which you can find here
