Message from the Rector
Ow sos ger,
It is with great sadness that I share with you the news of Steve Dalton’s death. Steve was church warden at Probus until the summer when he became too poorly to continue. He was a gifted and careful leader within the church. Steve sought at all times to create harmony and goodwill between the congregation and wider community and understood the mission of the church to be as a beacon of love and compassion in a world that is often fraught and bewildering. Please join with me in praying for Colleen and all her family as they mourn the loss of Steve as husband, friend, father and grandfather. The funeral is due to take place at Probus church on Tuesday 23rd Dec at 10.30.
Sunday 7th December saw a number of us at the cathedral to say our goodbyes and thanks to Bishop Hugh the now Bishop of Worcester. Bishop Hugh spoke eloquently, raising the question “who are you?” echoing the words of John the Baptist. He spoke about the importance of knowing who we are before God, yes, I am Caroline for example, wife, mother, daughter, sister, sewer, knitter, reader, walker, I am also a child of God. As a child of God there are before me the riches of heaven, a special place created just for me, a place within God’s own heart where love abounds, a place in which delight springs forth. Sometimes we forget this, allowing the temptations of our world to creep in and monopolise our hearts (as displayed from the ‘things’ we give our attention to and tend to worry over).
Bishop David led us in prayer for Hugh acknowledging the cost and pain of moving on as God calls us, a reminder that as priests we are called to abide, live deeply within our communities, to love and to serve, so much so that when God calls us on there will no doubt be great sadness and loss experienced. We send Bishop Hugh on to Worcester with our love, thankfulness for his ministry amongst us, and with every blessing.
And so, we approach the 3rd Sunday of Advent, we will hear again the question…are you the one? (who are you?), John knows that he is not the Saviour of the world, the much sought after Messiah. John seeks Jesus, giving him a nudge knowing that as John approaches his end that all that he has done, all that he has committed himself to, that glory will come through Jesus. And, indeed, it does. As we wait for the coming of our Lord, let us not give up but learn from John pointing the way to Jesus in and through all that we do.
Gras ha kres,
Caroline

As we look ahead to the readings for this coming Sunday, I invite you to pause, reflect and enter more deeply into the Word. Before the service, take time with the passage and ask the following four questions:
-
What does this passage tell me about God?
-
What does it tell me about human life?
-
If this really is God’s word, what will I do in response to it?
-
Who am I going to tell about what I have learnt from this?

O Lord Jesus Christ,
who at your first coming sent your messenger
to prepare your way before you:
grant that the ministers and stewards of your mysteries
may likewise so prepare and make ready your way
by turning the hearts of the disobedient to the wisdom of the just,
that at your second coming to judge the world
we may be found an acceptable people in your sight;
for you are alive and reign with the Father
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen

Our midweek home groups are a real blessing to be part of, a place where we share life, faith, and friendship. It’s often the first to hear when someone needs prayer or has good news to share.
We hope these groups will continue to grow and welcome new members as we journey together in faith.
For details about the different midweek home groups you can join, please contact the home group leaders.
Grampound with Creed meets on Thursday evenings (weekly) with William & Ruth Trinnick (various locations)
Probus will be meeting on Tuesday evenings (fortnightly) with Scott and Sue Hall
Probus will be meeting Thursday evenings (fortnightly) with Liz and Chris Marshman. Please contact Liz on 07525 456434.
Tresillian - We are hoping to begin a daytime group in Tresillian, more news to follow, but if you would like to offer your home please let Rev. Caroline know.

Mother’s Union News
www.mothersunion.org/diocese/truro
Thank you to everyone, especially new members, who attended Mothers’ Union’s Diocese Day at Truro Cathedral on Thursday 20 November. There was a packed morning service in St Mary’s Aisle, followed by an interesting talk from ‘Stop Loan Sharks’ and the AGM and refreshments in the afternoon.
Mothers’ Union continues to promote the Red Chair Campaign against gender-based violence. We have placed chairs in numerous churches across Cornwall, including Truro Cathedral, highlighting violence that blights the lives of women and girls from all walks of life in every part of the world. If you have not joined in yet, please find a poster attached, and all you need is an empty chair and a piece of red material to remind us of the women who have been killed. The National Domestic Abuse Helpline is 0808 2000 247.
Mothers’ Union’s RISE UP campaign involves branches making a commitment to
-
raising awareness of gender-based violence
-
praying for the victims, survivors and those who work in the field of domestic abuse, and
-
providing practical assistance. Mothers’ Union in Cornwall makes donations to all the men’s and women’s refuges in Cornwall, and some branches have provided ‘moving in’ and ‘moving on’ packages with useful items to give a little bit of comfort to the residents at a time of great anxiety.
It’s great that eleven of the fourteen Mothers’ Union branches in Cornwall have so far achieved RISE UP Bronze Awards!

Generosity and Stewardship Matters
Financially Supporting your church
The Parish Giving Scheme is our preferred method of receiving regular giving within the churches of Probus, Ladock and Grampound. If you haven't already transferred from other forms of giving then do check out how it works through the link here or by contacting your treasurer.
Please do consider whether this is a good time to review your regular giving at the church, or perhaps you would like to plan for a future donation and leave a gift in your will. The Church of England has produced guidance on legacy giving which you can find here
