Ladock News May 2026

Dear Friends and Neighbours,

As the seasons change we are now entering a very popular time for weddings. I have been busy meeting with couples who will be marrying each other over the next few months, and it is my privilege to do so.

When people come to see me and ask about a wedding they are often surprised by how personalised the wedding service becomes. They choose music that is special to their story, they choose readings both sacred and popular, and there are other special activities that can take place such as bell-ringing, or flower arrangements that can be themed in with the bride’s colour scheme. Members of the family or friends can take part in the service and all together they celebrate the love that brought the couple together and will sustain them throughout their lives together.

I often say to the couples as we come towards the final few weeks to remember that this is but one day. It is a special day, it is a holy day. The vows that are being made are said in front of witnesses, yes, their friends and family, but also in front of God. And wherever they are on the spectrum between belief and disbelief, there is  an awareness that the promises/vows are being made in front of something other. Something, Someone that is beyond our ways of understanding yet seeks our flourishing and well-being. Standing in church and making vows to one another and before God is an invitation for God to become part of that relationship. A popular ancient reading comes from the book of Proverbs, it says this

“Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favour and good success in the sight of God and man. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” (Proverbs 3:3-6 ESV)

God knows what it is like to love as a human, and knows that we find it hard and that it takes sacrifice to love someone well. Marriage is a gift for couples as they come together and promise to help and support each other, as they vow to commit to the other’s well-being. There are times when one gives and the other receives and there are times when this is revered. Neither person doing all the taking. At a church wedding we affirm the couples love for each other and we acknowledge the source of all love and seek God’s help and support for the couple as they embark on this new way of life together.

If you or someone you know would like to explore the church as somewhere they would like to marry, do get in touch,
