A message from Reverend Caroline
It is that time of year when it is a joy to cast our eyes over the fields and to notice that the harvest is being safely gathered in. As I visit different homes and notice the changing landscape from each vista, I am reminded of those ancient words in psalm 121:
“I lift up my eyes to the hills—
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth”.
The festival of harvest invites us to pause in the busy-ness of the everyday to appreciate the many things that we otherwise take for granted. At harvest we give thanks for the farmers who provide food for the nation; we think of all the people that are involved with collecting, packaging,
transporting, selling, preparing the various products that we hope to see on our supermarket shelves and in our local produce shops.
As we become more mindful of what it means to have these things made ready for us, we should pause to think of those who do not enjoy the same amount of choice or variety of foods that we do and our minds become more aware of those for whom hunger is always present. As Christians we are encouraged to express our ‘love for our neighbour’, the most practical and immediate means of doing so at this (and any) time of year being a contribution to a foodbank. Over the next few weeks all the churches of the Upper Fal Parishes will be collecting food items for the foodbanks If you would like contribute, please come along to a harvest festival and make your donation there, or, you can simply come into the church and leave your donation in or by the font.
Taking time to pause and reflect on the season and the good gifts that we are blessed with, helps us to develop hearts filled with gratitude and minds ready to appreciate each and every day: there is always something to be thankful for. You are most welcome to come to the harvest festival: we look forward to welcoming you, as we sing the great harvest hymns together.
