A Letter from Reverend Caroline
Dear Friends and Neighbours,
As I write the birds outside my window are singing their best to the glory of God; it is a new day and they seem to be so very excited! I love hearing the dawn chorus it is always so cheerful. The bible tells us that birds (specifically mentioning sparrows) are precious to God, and we (you and I) as children of God are so much more so in that we have been given a particular task, that being to take good care of all creation.
We are called to be ‘good stewards’, to look after the environment as well as each other. We (collectively) have not always been very good at doing this. In Truro Diocese we are being encouraged towards being recognised as an ‘eco’ church, by caring for our building and our churchyard in as environmentally-friendly a manner as possible. Ladock Churchyard is regularly maintained by our excellent and dedicated caretaker but we also need the support of everyone who comes to visit the churchyard to help keep the churchyard in a favourable state as a green space and as a place of remembrance.
Firstly, we would like to ask if you will help us to make the churchyards as ‘green’ as possible by using only natural items at burial sites, removing plastic wrapping, not using wire or plastic, or introducing extra vases or decorations.
Secondly, we also need to ask if you can take home and dispose of any unwanted debris as the Council do not empty any bins in churchyards.
Third, we ask that dogs are kept on leads at all times and that you pick up after them.
Finally, we are required to abide by the Diocese and general Health and Safety rules to ensure that the churchyard is kept as safe as possible for visitors and staff. The rules state that all memorials should conform to certain requirements in terms of size and materials used; they also prohibit the use of most other forms of decoration and adornment. There are sound practical reasons for this approach. The presence of kerbs and chippings makes mowing harder and increases risk when strimming, both to the operator and anyone who happens to be nearby. Glass jars, vases and ornaments can be caught by the strimmer also, breaking objects that might be significant to a family, as well as causing injury to the operator. Remember that damage can be caused by animals, the weather and flying debris
Please continue to help us keep our lovely churchyard green, pleasant, safe and tidy by observing these rules: they are on display in the church porch and on the church website. A leaflet that summarises the rules wil be available shortly.
Thank you for your support and understanding.
Grace and peace,
Caroline
