Jenny's Intercessions for Sunday 27th December 2020

Intercession Prayers for Sunday 27th December 2020, the Feast of St John the Evangelist

Lord, we come to you in prayer today to ask for Your help, Your forgiveness and above all, Your love.  As this difficult, frightening, often lonely and distressing year draws to its end, we thank you for your comfort and support, as our reading from Exodus says today, ‘The Lord has comforted his people’.  May we always look to you for solace.

Lord in Your Mercy, Hear Our Prayer

Despite the hard times, Almighty Father, we thank you for the hope and joy You have given us this Christmas, as we celebrated the birth of Your Son, Jesus Christ.  We pray for all those people who have shown kindness, and enabled us to feel hopeful and joyful.

Lord in Your Mercy, Hear Our Prayer

Today is the feast of St John the Evangelist, who, it is said, wrote the Gospel According to St John.  You probably know the story of St John, whose sermons became shorter and shorter the older he became.  Eventually, they were reduced to one line, ‘Little children, love one another.’  We pray that we may be able to remember and follow his words, especially when separated from our friends and family.  Help us to be thoughtful and cheerful, carrying out random acts of unseen kindness.

Lord in Your Mercy, Hear Our Prayer

Beloved Father, we pray for those who are suffering, mentally or physically, in particular those who are mourning the loss of loved ones this Christmas, or whose anniversaries occur about this time.  May the departed rest in peace and rise in glory.

Lord in Your Mercy, Hear Our Prayer

We pray for our hard working and inspiring clergy, the government and those in authority, our Queen and the Royal Family.  Help them in all they do.

Lord in Your Mercy, Hear Our Prayer

Our last prayer is from St John himself:-

Almighty God, You have taught us that all our doings without love are worth nothing.  Fill our hearts and minds this day with charity to others and fill our every action with kindness.  In the name of Jesus Christ, the king of love, Amen.
