Pentecost and Jubilee Morning Prayer, Sunday 5th June 2022

Morning Prayer
Sunday, 5th June 2022
Pentecost (Whit Sunday) with readings for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee

Preparation

O Lord, open our lips
All and our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Send your Holy Spirit upon us,
All and clothe us with power from on high. Alleluia..

Blessed are you, creator God,
to you be praise and glory for ever.
As your Spirit moved over the face of the waters
bringing light and life to your creation,
pour out your Spirit on us today
that we may walk as children of light
and by your grace reveal your presence.
Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
All Blessed be God for ever.

 A Song of God’s Righteousness

1Bless the Lord, O my soul, ♦
and all that is within me bless his holy name.

2Bless the Lord, O my soul, ♦
and forget not all his benefits;

3Who forgives all your sins ♦
and heals all your infirmities;

4Who redeems your life from the Pit ♦
and crowns you with faithful love and compassion;

5Who satisfies you with good things, ♦
so that your youth is renewed like an eagle’s.

6The Lord executes righteousness ♦
and judgement for all who are oppressed.

7He made his ways known to Moses ♦
and his works to the children of Israel.

8The Lord has established his throne in heaven, ♦
and his kingdom has dominion over all.

9Bless the Lord, you angels of his, ♦
you mighty ones who do his bidding
and hearken to the voice of his word.

10Bless the Lord, all you his hosts, ♦
you ministers of his who do his will.

11Bless the Lord, all you works of his,
in all places of his dominion; ♦
bless the Lord, O my soul.

Psalm 103.1-7, 19-22

AllGlory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.

The night has passed, and the day lies open before us;
let us pray with one heart and mind.

Silence is kept.

As we rejoice in the gift of this new day,
so may the light of your presence, O God,
set our hearts on fire with love for you;
now and for ever.
AllAmen.

The Word of God

Psalmody

Psalm 20

Prayer for Victory

To the leader. A Psalm of David.

The Lord answer you in the day of trouble!
    The name of the God of Jacob protect you!
May he send you help from the sanctuary,
    and give you support from Zion.
May he remember all your offerings,
    and regard with favour your burnt sacrifices.Selah

May he grant you your heart’s desire,
    and fulfil all your plans.
May we shout for joy over your victory,
    and in the name of our God set up our banners.
May the Lord fulfil all your petitions.

Now I know that the Lord will help his anointed;
    he will answer him from his holy heaven
    with mighty victories by his right hand.
Some take pride in chariots, and some in horses,
    but our pride is in the name of the Lord our God.
They will collapse and fall,
    but we shall rise and stand upright.

Give victory to the king, O Lord;
    answer us when we call.

All Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.

Old Testament Reading

Joshua 1:1-9

God’s Commission to Joshua

1 After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord spoke to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, saying, ‘My servant Moses is dead. Now proceed to cross the Jordan, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving to them, to the Israelites. Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you, as I promised to Moses. From the wilderness and the Lebanon as far as the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, to the Great Sea in the west shall be your territory. No one shall be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will not fail you or forsake you. Be strong and courageous; for you shall put this people in possession of the land that I swore to their ancestors to give them. Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to act in accordance with all the law that my servant Moses commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, so that you may be successful wherever you go. This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth; you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to act in accordance with all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall be successful. I hereby command you: Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.’

Canticle

A Song of Ezekiel,

Refrain:

All The Spirit of God fills the whole world. Alleluia.

1I will take you from the nations, ♦
and gather you from all the countries.

2I will sprinkle clean water upon you, ♦
and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses.

3A new heart I will give you, ♦
and put a new spirit within you,

4And I will remove from your body the heart of stone ♦
and give you a heart of flesh.

5You shall be my people, ♦
and I will be your God.

Ezekiel 36.24-26, 28b

All Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.

All The Spirit of God fills the whole world. Alleluia.

New Testament  Reading

Revelation 21:22-22:4

22 I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. 23 And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God is its light, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24 The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it. 25 Its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there. 26 People will bring into it the glory and the honour of the nations. 27 But nothing unclean will enter it, nor anyone who practises abomination or falsehood, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

The River of Life

22 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. Nothing accursed will be found there any more. But the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him; they will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your people
All and kindle in us the fire of your love.
All who are led by the Spirit of God
are children of God and fellow-heirs with Christ.
All Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your people.
Renew the face of your creation, Lord,
pouring on us the gifts of your Spirit,
All and kindle in us the fire of your love.
For the creation waits with eager longing
for the glorious liberty of the children of God.
All Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your people
and kindle in us the fire of your love.

Gospel Reading

Luke 22:24-30

The Dispute about Greatness

24 A dispute also arose among them as to which one of them was to be regarded as the greatest. 25 But he said to them, ‘The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those in authority over them are called benefactors. 26 But not so with you; rather the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like one who serves. 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.

28 ‘You are those who have stood by me in my trials; 29 and I confer on you, just as my Father has conferred on me, a kingdom, 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

The Benedictus (The Song of Zechariah):

Refrain:

All Christ has gone up on high
and has led captivity captive. Alleluia.

1Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel, ♦
who has come to his people and set them free.

2He has raised up for us a mighty Saviour, ♦
born of the house of his servant David.

3Through his holy prophets God promised of old ♦
to save us from our enemies,
from the hands of all that hate us,

4To show mercy to our ancestors, ♦
and to remember his holy covenant.

5This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham: ♦
to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

6Free to worship him without fear, ♦
holy and righteous in his sight
all the days of our life.

7And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, ♦
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

8To give his people knowledge of salvation ♦
by the forgiveness of all their sins.

9In the tender compassion of our God ♦
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

10To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, ♦
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Luke 1.68-79

All Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.

Refrain:

All Christ has gone up on high
and has led captivity captive. Alleluia.
