Benefice Bulletin for Sunday 7th August 2022

The Benefice of Probus, Ladock, Grampound with Creed and St Erme

Dear All,

As I continue learning what is is to be a priest, I realise that part of the job is simply to be with people through the best days and the worst days. Tomorrow I will be marrying a young couple at St Crida Church. Its a privilege to be able be a part of their special day, filled with love, happiness and hopefully sunshine. But today I visited Ann Staten as she, her family and the rest of us come to terms with the loss of Neil. She mentioned how so many within the church have already showed the love and support of a family, which is what we are. There will be a funeral at the church and we will announce the details here in due time. Many of you will have known Neil for longer than I have, but my lasting memory will be the two days we spent, just a number of weeks ago, teaching the children from Probus School about the History of our Church. Central to our message was what Neil called "The Probus Prayer" which can be found on the ceiling of the chancel and reads "Jesu, us thy people hear, send us grace and good for e'er". Neil, being a former History teacher, was great at capturing the children's interest in these things, but what was especially precious was being able to say that prayer with the children, as relevant today as it was when it was first composed hundreds of years ago. God is gracious and he is good to us and this is most powerfully seen in the salvation that Jesus won for us on the cross. This act of grace means that death, though still painfully present in our world as we are now experiencing, does not have the last word. It is my sure and certain hope that God has answered Neil's prayer, that Neil will know the grace and goodness of God as he rests in peace and rises in glory.

Almighty Lord and everlasting God,
we beseech you to direct, sanctify and govern
both our hearts and bodies
in the ways of your laws
and the works of your commandments;
that through your most mighty protection, both here and ever,
we may be preserved in body and soul;
through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
