May 2020 Message from Rev Joachim Foot and churchwarden, Jeremy Sharp

Ladock News May 2020

Psalm 46:1 ‘God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.’

Whilst the lockdown roles on seemingly at infinitum, we are, God willing, starting to see signs that the deadly pestilence is coming under control. That having been said, I must offer my sincerest apologies that the church building needs to remain closed for the time being. I know how important it is for so many of you to enter the building for quiet prayer and reflection particularly in times of crisis and I am sorry that the law currently prevents this.

We are offering a number of online resources for people who would care to participate in prayer and worship at this time, please visit our website for regular updates relating to this. I continue to pray for you all at this time, and I want to say a special thank you to everyone who has been offering help to the community in all sorts of ways, for all the care and concern you have been showing to your neighbours and those in need.

The Reverend Linda Whetter and I remain available to anyone in the village, whether you are a churchgoer or not, should you need someone to talk to or pray with either by email or phone call.

We continue to have virtual services every Sunday. I am now able to record them inside churches and I am taking the opportunity to do so for each of the parishes in the Team in turn. the full order of service, prayers, suggested hymns and a sermon are available on the website for anyone and everyone to read and follow in their own time and wherever they happen to be. We have just started to hold services on Zoom every Sunday. They are open to all and if you would like to receive an invitation please contact me or one of the people listed below.

I pray for the day we will be able to open our doors again to the community.

The Reverend Raymond Jones

Many of us remember Raymond Jones, our vicar in the 1990s. We have been informed that he died peacefully in a nursing Home in Dorchester early last month. Rosie Morris has written: ‘Raymond was a good man and a good friend, but a release for him as he’d been ill for some time.’

VE Day

It proved impossible to mark VE Day as intended, It was marked by the ringing of one of the church bells and the playing of the Last Post and Reveille at the War Memorial, for which we thank Kit Trustrum Eve, Brian and Hilary Spong’s grandson. Kit had to play almost alone.

The full celebrations have been moved to 16 August, the revised ‘official’ date. Uncertainty over the lifting of lockdown restrictions makes it difficult to make definite plans, but we hope still to have some form of service with Bishop Philip, possibly followed by a picnic lunch. We have decided to postpone the concert until next year, the provisional date being 12 March.

Future Events

The current closure of the Church notwithstanding, we are looking ahead and trying to make plans for future services and events. Sadly, we have had to cancel the Fete, but we hope to have some stalls at the monthly coffee mornings in the autumn. On the assumption that some form of normality returns in time, we have been able to reschedule the following events:

The Johnny Cowling Concert originally on 25 March has been moved to 22 July, subject to the lifting of lockdown restrictions. All tickets sold for March will remain valid.
