Ladock Church Annual Fete 2017

Ladock Church Annual Garden Fete 2017

Under totally cloudless skies, on one of the most beautiful summer days I can recall in Ladock, we held our annual Fete on the lawns of Ladock House.  It was the first one without Lady Mary Holborow in our midst.  Although really saddened by her death, but encouraged by Kate and Simon Holborow, it was decided to go ahead as planned and, to quote Churchwarden Shirley Soper, “make it a bumper one for Mary”.  We are extremely touched and grateful to Kate and Simon for their understanding and generosity.

After a short introduction and prayers by Revd Ellie Goldsmith, followed by a minutes silence in remembrance of Lady Mary, the fete was officially opened by Colonel Edward Bolitho OBE Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall resplendent (and no doubt rather hot!) in his full ceremonial dress uniform.

To start the musical entertainment a group of Ladock Schoolchildren sang beautifully - including a lovely solo of “Somewhere over the rainbow” by Molly Shephard.  Cober Valley Accordion Band then followed with many old favourites before ‘The Crooner’, Andy Marshall, a newcomer to the fete, delighted a very appreciative audience.

Well spread over both the upper and lower lawns, and taking as much advantage of shade as possible, there were a wonderful selection of stalls to browse with homemade produce, preserves, cakes, pastries, savouries and handmade gifts as well as books, toys, plants, bric-a-brac and ‘preloveds’ and a Tombola.  There were two raffles, five competitions and a chance to ‘Bowl for the pig’ or ‘Splat the rat’.  Face painting and the Bouncy Castle entertained the young and there was opportunity to have your portrait skilfully drawn.

Delicious refreshments were available including Pimms, Hotdogs and Hamburgers, Ice cream, popcorn, strawberries, desserts, luscious cakes and Cornish cream teas.

Following the rousing closing numbers of Lamorna and Trelawney Kate Holborow presented the prizes

The winners of this year’s Grand Draw were

  1. £100 cash – Ian Holt
  2. Nintendo Wii – Simon Holborow
  3. £25 – Bob Weston
  4. Duchy of Cornwall voucher – Hilary Wenmann
  5. Trudgian’s Farm shop voucher – Annie Binding
  6. Falmouth Arms voucher – Charlie Gold
  7. Ladock Stores voucher – Marcia Tickle
  8. Mary’s Pasties voucher – T. Camps
  9. Probus Fish and Chip Shop voucher – Christian Manuel
  10. Slice Pizzas voucher – Debs Seccombe Stephens

The Chicken Dinner raffle was won by ME (hooray!), Richard Blyth bowled the best for the pig, Nessa Morcom guessed the most correct answers in the photo competition (all 20!), Paul Hibbert won the Ladock Players competition with the Pascoe’s as runners up, Elaine Milling discovered where Lily the seahorse was swimming and Ellie Baxter was closest guessing the number of sweets in the jar.  Karen Hurn and Chris tied for first place with Gloria Thomas coming third in Ethel’s horticultural anagram quiz.

It costs in excess of £25,000 annually to keep the church running and the fete is our major fundraising event.  Our biggest sum ever, over £3400, was realised so we give our heartfelt thanks to all of you who contributed so generously, in any way, to make it such a success both financially and as a very special village occasion.

It was very definitely “A BUMPER FETE FOR MARY”.

                                                            THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH

Suzanne Warring
